DON’T BREAK THE CHAIN: 2013 Challenge

I have spoken about “writing everyday”. I assume very few of you actually do it.

I was once in your shoes.

A new year is a milestone of your life; an opportunity to change things in your favor. Some call it a “fresh start”.

What do you want to accomplish in 2013? What will you do to make that happen? It can start now.

In 2013, I challenge you to write everyday.

To-do this task proves difficult. To find the time, energy, want and inspiration — it goes on and on. I too thought it couldn’t be done. I once doubted myself.

This time last year, I was preparing for a practice called DON’T BREAK THE CHAIN. It was designed by comedian Jerry Seinfeld. It was way of building a habit and becoming a better writer. All he did was write everyday.

January 1st 2012.

Flash forward 365 days and you’ll find me. A man who has written everyday for the past year. Year one is COMPLETE. Year two, starts tomorrow. I’m excited.

It’s easy to look back and say it was easy to “not break the chain”. I just made sure that, for the past 12 months, everyday, I’d put words on paper. Sometimes it was  two pages. Some days it was one. Others, it was notes and research. Days were good. Days were bad.

You’ll need a calendar and a red marker to build your chain.

Everyday you write, draw an X through the day. After some time you’ll see your chain growing. Day after day, adding an X will become easy.

The habit will grow and writing everyday will be like brushing your teeth. The whole point is not to break the chain. Keep building that chain. Keep writing.

This was my goal of 2012. It has helped  build confidence in my work. My habit has grown large and the inspiration, the want, the energy and the time to write is no longer needed. I just do it.

Here’s a link for a DBC Free Calendar:

Otherwise Amazon has some cool calendars, with plenty of themes, to go with your writing.

I hope 2013 goes as planned.

Always be writing. Everyday.
